Examples - Operating Systems

A web operating system, is an Internet web application within a web browser, that acts, performs and provides the services found in an operating system, such as Windows, Linux or Mac..  The dream of a WebOS reaches back to a key note speech by Mr. Gates as the future of operating systems in the emergence of web appliances.  Today, applications such as Microsoft Word are now 70% web application and will soon be entirely web based.  My WebOS design was focused on two parts:  Software and Webware.  The software portion is the core or true operating system component responsible for booting and providing hardware services of a computer.  Thus, with a lot of help from another experienced engineer, I crafted a specialized version of the popular Linux based Knoppix on a CD.  That could be used to provide a platform from which to run a browser and the Webware portion of the WebOS.  The Webware portion of the WebOS could now be launched from the special no cost Knoppix version or from Windows, Linux or someday, MacOS.  But, 95% of the purpose of a WebOS is in the Webware portion.  The WebOS I designed is nearly 500,000 lines of highly specialized non-generated code of which two-thirds I programmed.  Currently, I have an Alpha version of the software which has real promise for Enterprise applications and web services.  Here are a few previews.  At some point, besides showing demos from my laptop, I will have it available online.

Pictured here is one of the latest desktop variations.  It shows a Windows like menu, a Mac Tsunami style menu and a highly specialized engineering menu call the "System Manager".  In Addition, a window is opened to the main information cover page of the accounting package.

Pictured is an older desktop prior to the completion of the new application registration framework and windows style menuing.  The icons are less elegant as they are now and overall the system was about twice as slow as it is now.

The main login has undergone a number of changes, usually corresponding with the security infrastructure changes, but none as dramatic as the current.  The WebOS is getting very elegant in design.  All graphics and design work I have had to do alone, and while I'm a decent graphic artist, it's not my profession.

Pic. File system preview soon.
