Examples - Operating Systems A web operating system, is an Internet web application within a web browser, that acts, performs and provides the services found in an operating system, such as Windows, Linux or Mac.. The dream of a WebOS reaches back to a key note speech by Mr. Gates as the future of operating systems in the emergence of web appliances. Today, applications such as Microsoft Word are now 70% web application and will soon be entirely web based. My WebOS design was focused on two parts: Software and Webware. The software portion is the core or true operating system component responsible for booting and providing hardware services of a computer. Thus, with a lot of help from another experienced engineer, I crafted a specialized version of the popular Linux based Knoppix on a CD. That could be used to provide a platform from which to run a browser and the Webware portion of the WebOS. The Webware portion of the WebOS could now be launched from the special no cost Knoppix version or from Windows, Linux or someday, MacOS. But, 95% of the purpose of a WebOS is in the Webware portion.
